Naranam

2023

Viola, Cello, Vibraphone, and Marimba (11')

A legend from Indian culture tells the story of Naranath Branthan, who pushes a boulder up a hill every day, only to let it roll back down again. It seems like an absurd task without purpose until one delves into his motivation. His actions appear absurd only as long as one assumes there is no intrinsic joy in the tasks themselves. Happiness lies in the motivation for action and in the moment itself.

The piece caricatures the apparent absurdity of the world while also processing how we deal with it.

Premiered on September 10, 2023, by the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg at the Laeiszhalle.
